    1. Horseradish peroxidase was applied by iontophoretic injections to physiologically identified regions of the laryngeal motor nucleus, the nucleus ambiguus in the CF/FM batRhinolophus rouxi. 2. The connections of the nucleus ambiguus were analysed with regards to their possible functional significance in the vocal control system, in the respiration control system, and in mediating information from the central auditory system. 3. The nucleus ambiguus is reciprocally interconnected with nuclei involved in the generation of the vocal motor pattern, i.e., the homonomous contralateral nucleus and the area of the lateral reticular formation. Similarly, reciprocal connections are found with the nuclei controlling the rhythm of respiration, i.e., medial parts of the medulla oblongata and the parabrachial nuclei. 4. Afferents to the nucleus ambiguus derive from nuclei of the descending vocalization system (periaqueductal gray and cuneiform nuclei) and from motor control centers (red nucleus and frontal cortex). 5. Afferents to the nucleus ambiguus, possibly mediating auditory influence to the motor control of vocalization, come from the superior colliculus and from the pontine nuclei. The efferents from the pontine nuclei are restricted to rostral parts of the nucleus ambiguus, which hosts the motoneurons of the cricothyroid muscle controlling the call frequency

    We construct the explicit one-loop functional of chiral perturbation theory for two light flavours, including virtual photons. We stick to contributions where 1 or 2 mesons and at most one photon are running in the loops. With the explicit functional at hand, the evaluation of the relevant Green functions boils down to performing traces over the flavour matrices.     Law Activation Strategies (LAS) in Environmental Policymaking: a Social Mechanism for Re-politicization?

    Despite the exponential development of environmental policies, environmental problems persist and are constantly evolving. !ere is, clearly, a distance between the abstraction of rules and the concreteness of action. Going beyond the depoliticization and institutional determinism that environmental policy analysis often conveys, this article suggests that the analysis should be re-politicized in order to understand these gaps. Based on this reasoning, the concept of "law activation strategy" (LAS) is proposed as a social mechanism to analyze the complex interplay between legal rules, actors' behaviors, and environmental outcomes. Embedded within political games and asymmetric power relations, LAS cover the various positions that actors may take with regards to the rules that structure their action: concretization, passivity, diversion, circumvention, and innovation. The concept is integrated to a broader analytical framework and applied to an empirical case study related to aquatic ecosystem protection in Switzerland. By doing so, the paper demonstrates the explanatory power of LAS and its pertinence in providing a more political understanding of environmental policymaking

    Accessibility, equity and the sharing of water resources

    While the supply of water to dry or arid mountain regions has long been a major challenge, the on-going processes of climatic and socio-economic change currently affecting the hydrosystems of the Alps raise the spectre of renewed pressure on water resources and possible local shortages. In such a context, questions relating to fair distribution of water are all the more sensitive given the tendency to neglect the social dimension of sustainability. The present paper makes both a conceptual and empirical contribution to this debate by analysing a system of distribution that has a long experience of water scarcity management: the community governance models traditionally linked to the irrigation channels, or bisses, typical of the Swiss Alpine canton of Valais. More specifically, we evaluate these models in terms of accessibility and equity, characteristics that we use to operationalize the notion of 'fair distribution'. We examine these dimensions in three case studies with a view to highlighting the limitations of the aforementioned models. Indeed, despite their cooperative and endogenous nature, they tend to not only exclude certain members of the population, but also to reproduce rather than reduce social inequalities within the community. In general, these results challenge the rosy picture generally found in the literature relating to these community governance models

    Generating Functional for Strong and Nonleptonic Weak Interactions

    The generating functional for Green functions of quark currents is given in closed form to next-to-leading order in the low-energy expansion for chiral SU(3), including one-loop amplitudes with up to three meson propagators. Matrix elements and form factors for strong and nonleptonic weak processes with at most six external states can be extracted from this functional by performing three-dimensional flavour traces. To implement this procedure, a Mathematica program is provided that evaluates amplitudes with at most six external mesons, photons (real or virtual) and virtual W (semileptonic form factors).     The fluorine-NHC gauche effect: a structural and computational study

    Herein, we report the synthesis and X-ray structural analysis of a collection of fluorinated metal N-heterocyclic carbenes (Ag, Au, Pd, Rh, Ir) and their precursor salts. The common structural feature of these species is a flanking fluoroethyl group which is either freely rotating or embedded within a bicyclic framework. Solid state analysis confirmed a gauche conformational preference in all cases with the fluorine adopting a syn clinal arrangement (ϕ[NCCF] ~ 60°) with respect to the triazolium nitrogen at the vicinal position of the NHC. A density functional theory analysis was employed to quantify these effects and evaluate the influence of electronic modulation of the carbenic carbon [(C=N+); neutral carbene (C:); metal-bound carbene (C=M)], on the relative gauche / anti preference, thus highlighting the potential of this conformational phenomenon as a useful molecular design strategy for controlling the topology of organometallic complexes

    Spectrum and decays of hadronic atoms

    We describe the spectra and decays of pi pi and pi K atoms within a non-relativistic effective field theory. The evaluations of the energy shifts and widths are performed at next-to-leading order in isospin symmetry breaking.
